Deadpool 2 music maker Tyler Bates is set as anchor for the keynote session at the 5th Annual Production Music Conference, taking place Sept. 26-28 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel. Bates will be interviewed by Variety reporter Jon Burlingame at the Sept. 27 session focusing on the composer’s experience creating music for film, TV, and videogames.
Bates’ film credits include Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, John Wick and John Wick Chapter 2 and Atomic Blonde. “Tyler Bates is one of the preeminent composers for major motion pictures in the world today,” Production Music Association chairman Adam Taylor, president of APM Music, said in making the announcement. “His remarkable success across a diverse range of projects is truly impressive. We are beyond thrilled and delighted that he has agreed to speak to our members from around the world during our upcoming Production Music Conference.”
Added Bates: “My heart is in absolutely everything I do. Whether it’s rock or a score, I do my best to always explore new ideas. My primary goal as an artist is to connect with people, understand my collaborators, and hopefully translate that understanding into re-telling an emotion. I’m really excited about the prospect of making more interesting art.”
Founded in 1997, the Production Music Association (PMA) is the leading advocacy group of the production music community. A non-profit organization with over 60 member companies representing over 500 music libraries around the world, plus composers and industry professionals, the mission of the PMA is to elevate the unique value of production music and to ensure the long term viability of the production music industry. More than 650 members of the global production community converged in Los Angeles to attend the group’s PMC summit last year.
When he’s not creating scores for visual media, Bates doubles as a rock guitarist, songwriter, and record producer. Since 2015 he’s been collaborating with Marilyn Manson, with whom he co-write and produced the 2015 critically and commercially successful album The Pale Emperor. Bates went on the year-long headline “Hell Not Hallelujah Tour” tour to support the album. In 2017, Bates and Manson once again joined forces in the studio for Manson’s follow-up, Heaven Upside Down, followed by a world tour.
