Deru Has ‘Impulse’ for YouTube Red

Emmy award-winning composer and music producer Benjamin Wynn, known professionally as Deru, has been signed to Doug Liman’s new series Impulse for Youtube Red.

Deru’s signature dark electronic sound will no doubt lend scope and depth to the story of a teen girl who discovers her ability to teleport and the chain of events that follow as she attempts to reconcile the challenges she subsequently faces.

Deru’s Impulse work showcases his expertise with cool electronica beats punctuating moody melodics for a futuristic plotline. His past projects include original scores for the Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness (for which he won two Daytime Emmy Awards for sound editing). As part of Track Team he composed original music and contributed sound design to the Warner Home Video series of DC Showcase original shorts (Superman/Shazam, The Return of Black Adam, Jonah Hex, Green Arrow, and The Spectre).

A graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Wynn has a BA in music technology. He was previously partnered with Jeremy Zuckerman in The Track Team.

In 2007  Deru collaborated with British composer Joby Talbot on the score to the Wayne McGregor ballet Genus, based on Charles Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species, commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet.  The ambitious eight-part score combines electronics with a 10-part choir and string instruments. It is available on Ant-Zen and Dear Oh Dear Records and was featured in the 2009 documentary La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet.

In addition to his scoring work, Wynn is a founding member and creative director of The Echo Society, a Los Angeles based composer collective and non-profit organization that premiers new orchestral works in singular, one-night-only events. In October, Echo Society produced its sixth installment, a concept art piece entitled Family, in a Silver Lake mansion.

Deru is represented by the Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency’s Kevin Korn.
