American Idol has been renewed by ABC, sending the progenitor of all music competition shows into what will be its 17th season. Judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie as well as host Ryan Seacrest have all been re-upped as well.

The FremantleMedia-produced show enjoyed 15 high-profile seasons on Fox network, where it finished up in 2016 then before going dark for a while, then being resurrected at ABC. Esconced there beginning in 2017, it averaged a 2.1 rating with adults 18-49 during the Sunday night airings and a 1.9 rating for the Monday night telecasts (live-plus-three). Though below the numbers it achieved during its final season on Fox, that was good enough for the renewal, since ABC was only guaranteeing advertisers a 1.8 rating.

The Hollywood Reporter indicates ABC has been selling 30-second spots on the show for close to $200,000, and that 75 percent its season inventory sold-out before it premiered. Perry was guaranteed a budget-busting $25 million to join the show, with Seacrest rumored to be the second-highest of the show’s earners, at $10 million.

Idol and all the other ABC shows will be hawked at the advertiser upfronts in New York on May 16.
