Saadiq, Zimmer, Top Hollywood Music in Media Noms

Hans Zimmer and Raphael Saadiq topped the list of nominees for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, with three each. There were six double-noms: Lorne Balfe, Nicholas Britell, Mychael Danna, Laura Karpman, Diane Warren and Rupert Gregson-Williams, who had two. The HMMA’s honor music in film, TV, videogames, commercials and trailers in a total of 19 categories, including for the first time this year Best Music Documentary, recognizing programs that educate, exemplify the process or display the impact of music. 

The dazzling list of nominees also includes Philip Glass, T Bone Burnett and recently deceased Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell.

Zimmer received nominations in the original score categories for sci-fi/horror/fantasy film for Blade Runner 2049 and animated film for Boss Baby  as well as for best television main title theme for NatGeo’s Genius.  Saadiq drew kudos for the song “Mighty River,” from the film Mudbound, and shared his two other nominations with Karpman, with whom he collaborated on the best documentary song contender “Jump,” from the film Step, and TV limited series score for WGN’s Underground.

Danna scored a double with his feature score for The Man Who Invented Christmas as well as for his animated score to The Breadwinner, which he musicalized with brother Jeff Dana. The duo will go up against Balfe and his LEGO Batman Movie. In addition, Balfe shared Zimmer’s nom for Genius.

Gregson-Williams is recognized for his TV theme on Netflix’s The Crownas well as for Wonder Woman in the feature score category, where he’ll compete with Battle of the Sexes, which also earned Britnell songwriter honors for “If I Dare. Blue chip songsmith Warren nabbed entries in the feature song category for Marshall’s “Stand Up For Something” and for documentary song with Cries from Syria’s “Prayers for This World.”

HMMA nominees represent visual music from around the world including Spain, UK, Argentina, France, Norway and Australia. The nominations are selected by an advisory board and selection committee which includes journalists, music executives, music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL), The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, NARAS and performing rights organizations.

The 2017 HMMA event will be held at The Avalon Hollywood 1735 Vine Street on Thursday, Nov. 16. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Education Through Music Los Angeles (ETMLA).
