Sony/ATV Music Publishing has landed four songs in three new Volkswagen spots for its 2018 Tiguan SUV. Electric Light Orchestra’s 1976 classic “Livin’ Thing” kicks off the campaign by the German car manufacturer’s creative agency of record, Deutsch, in the spot “The New King.”
“It’s rare in our industry to work with one publisher for an entire campaign, but with the caliber of music under Sony/ATV, it was easy to bring the creative idea to life,” Deutsch music supervisor Eryk Rich said.
The “King” commerial, which debuted in early August features a blonde beauty tooling through the streets of Manhattan in a Habanero Orange VW Tiguan, trailed by a giant inflatable King Kong that broke loose from the dealership (winds up atop the Empire State building).
The second spot, “Top of the Food Chain,” also debuts this month against a Big Apple backdrop, this time to the accompaniment of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “Love Is All Around” (written by Sonny Curtis) featuring an office worker rushing to her desk after parking her Tiguan in her beloved parking spot.
The third spot in the campaign called “Nuts” features “Zorba The Greek” and digital pre-roll videos feature the Eighties hit “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora as their respective soundtracks.
All of the songs are 100% controlled by Sony/ATV. “Two key members from my team, Brian Cappelli and John Campanelli, yet again proved they can dig deep and find the right songs to match any brief and when you couple that with a creative monster like Eryk it’s a match made in heaven,” Sony/ATV President, Global Chief Marketing Officer Brian Monaco said.
“It’s fantastic to partner with a great company like Deutsch and be able to align our objectives while remaining independent organizations,” Monaco added. For his part, Rich said he looks forward to “growing our partnership.”
And there’s plenty of room to grow. Established in 1995, Sony/ATV has a catalog of nearly 4 million songs. In addition to its own library, Sony/ATV brokers synch deals for EMI Music Publishing and iconic music catalogs such as Leiber & Stoller, Mijac Music, Motown and Famous Music. Sony/ATV also controls many of the best known songs ever written such as “New York, New York”, “Hallelujah”, “All You Need Is Love”, “You’ve Got a Friend”, “Moon River”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “The Mission Impossible Theme”, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Over the Rainbow”, “Stand By Me”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”
In addition, Sony/ATV represents the copyrights of such legendary artists as The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Carole King, Kraftwerk, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Richie Sambora, Sting, The Supremes, Wyclef Jean, Hank Williams and Stevie Wonder, among others. Its ever-growing list of chart-topping artists, writers and producers includes Avicii, The Chainsmokers, Drake, Calvin Harris, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, P!nk, Shakira, Ed Sheeran, Sia, Sam Smith, Stargate, Taylor Swift, Walk The Moon, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
