Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have a new musical, “Up There.”

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the musical team behind the mega-hit Frozen, raise the curtain on a new stage production, “Up Here.” The romantic comedy gets its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse, where it runs through Sept. 6.

Lopez co-wrote the music and lyrics for the “Book of Mormon” and “Avenue Q.” “Up Here” is based on his original idea, and he the couple share credit as co-creators, co-book writers, co-lyricists and co-composers.  Lopez said the story is based on the courtship that led up to their 2003 marriage, leverages the novel twist of “feelings” singing to the audience, as opposed to characters.

“Kind of what this show is about is taking someone who maybe hasn’t taken a lot of risks, because of all the voices in his head and meeting him at that very moment where he’s decided that the need to connect with someone is stronger than his need to stay safe,” Anderson-Lopez told KPBS in an in-depth interview about the project.  In the same piece, Lopez cites Andrew Lloyd Weber (“Cats,” “Phantom of the Opera”) as a big influence on the project.  “It’s a strong melodic score.”

One that will also feature many tunes, according to Anderson-Lopez, who describes it as as “eclectic,” featuring “anything from a Stravinsky-inspired pastoral to The Monkees, to Motown. It’s a kaleidoscopic world up here in our head, so there are many references.”
