Critics Tout La La Land Song and Score

La La Land was the big winner at the 22nd Critics Choice Awards with eight wins, including Best Score for Justin Hurwitz and best song for “City of Lights,” written by Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and performed in the film by Ryan Gosling.

The Lion’s Gate film parlayed its buoyant run on the festival circuit into a strong opening weekend, racking up $855,000 in a five-location limited release, according to Comscore.  The film, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, is being credited wtih reviving the traidition of the Hollywood musical genre.  The Critics Choice also awarded Chazelle Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, as well as adding Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Editing and Best Cinematography to the film’s Sunday evening haul.

In other music-related wins,  NBC’s The Voice  won Best Reality Competition Series, and CBS’s The Late Late Show with James Corden, with its breakthrough “Carpool Karaoke” segments that have provided a vibrant marketing platform for pop acts, took Best Talk Show honors.

T.J. Miller, star of HBO’s Silicon Valley hosted the ceremony, which took place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and aired live on A&E.
