First time proved a charm for Emmy debutante Diane Warren, who took home the gold statuette for Original Music for the haunting “‘Til It Happens To You,” performed by Lady Gaga for the CNN college rape special “The Hunting Ground.” Warren, a prolific songwriter, has received eight Academy Award nominations but has yet to carry off a statuette.
The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards honored music talent in five categories. Victor Reyes surely went home a happy man, beating heavyweights like James Newton Howard, Jeff Russo and Jeff Beal to triumph with his noirish scoring for “The Night Manager,” a limited series based on John LeCarre’s novel.
Likewise, first-time Emmy winner Mac Quayle and his moody “Mr. Robot” score bested veteran Sean Callery in the Drama Score category, but Callery was not down for the count — claiming top honors for his “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” theme. (The only other multiple-nominees were Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”). Quayle was nominated last year for “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”
Rounding out the winner’s circle, Danny Elfman pulled rank among music directors with his “Live From Lincoln Center” special, “Music From The Films Of Tim Burton.”
A broad swathe of agencies represented the talent pool, top among them Fortress, Gorfaine/Schwartz and Kraft-Engel, each amassing four noms and one win. CAA and WME/Endeavor each saw clients collecting three noms.
The biggest category, however, seemed to be “unrepresented,” with five, including Warren — who appears to negotiate her deals as CEO of her own company, Realsongs — and Timbaland protege Jim Beanz, recognized for his “Good People” song from “Empire.”
