Can the Ryan Coogler film repeat 'La La Land's' 2016 music double play?

In a music list that spread the wealth, Black Panther was doubly rewarded with Golden Globes nominations in both the song and score categories. The Marvel blockbuster received a total of three Globes noms, including best picture, and was touted as the first comic book-based film to receive recognition in that category.

A Star is Born also got a nomination in the best picture drama category, as did Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about the rock band Queen, which also earned an award for Rami Malek as lead singer Freddie Mercury. Nominations for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning, Dec. 6, at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

When the 76th Annual Golden Globe nominees were announced this morning, Dec. 6, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Panther led the music pack, in the music race with composer Ludwig Göransson’s score and the song “All the Stars,”  written by Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg, SZA, Sounwave, and Al Shux, and performed for the film by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.

The film could well sweep the music race, as La La Land did in 2017 with “City of Lights”  and a trophy for composer Justin Hurwitz, nominated this year for the space drama First Man.  Hurwitz shared the 2017 song award with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Last year’s score winner for The Shape of Water, Alexandre Desplat, is nominated in the same category this year for his work on Wes Anderson’s animated Isle of Dogs.

The musical reboot A Star is Born came up with five nominations, including best song, for “Shallow.” The film didn’t utilize a composer and wasn’t eligible in that category, but Lady Gaga received notice for her performance, as did Bradley Cooper, who also competes in the directing category in his first at bat.

It’s Gaga’s third Globe nomination. She made the list for the 2012 ceremony for co-writing (with Elton John and Bernie Taupin) the song “Hello, Hello” for the animated film Gnomeo & Juliet, and in 2016 won for acting on the TV series American Horror Show.

If mass popularity is any prognosticator, “Shallow” is the song frontrunner. The Star is Born soundtrack album was released on Oct. 5, debuting at No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 200 and soundtrack charts. It’s topped the soundtrack chart since its release and both the song and album are poised for RIAA platinum certification.

Best song nominee Marc Shaiman was nominated last year for best song with “The Star,” for the animated film of the same name. Annie Lennox won in 2002 for the song “Into the West,” for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In the class of 2019, Dolly Parton has the most previous Golden Globe noms, with six, though she’s never won. All the others are first-time Globe contenders.

The film that received the most Globe nominations — Vice with six — did not generate a nomination for composer Nicholas Britell, who was in contention for the 2017 ceremony for Moonlight.

Eligibility for the Golden Globes corresponds to the calendar year, Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2018. The 76th Annual Golden Globes ceremony airing on NBC takes place Sunday, Jan. 26, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Adam Samberg and Sandra Oh host.
