Composer James Newton Howard tops the box office charts with Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald and a $62.2 million domestic box office haul in its debut frame. The Warner Bros. film is Howard’s second installment in the wizarding series, continuing the themes he developed in 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The films continue the adventures of the Harry Potter universe, which according to Comscore have generated $8.5 billion globally from the first “Potter” film released way back in 2001 through the 2016 entry, which made more than $800 million on its own.
The film stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Johnny Depp, Katherine Waterston, Carmen Ejogo, William Nadylam, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz and is directed by David Yates. The film took in $191 million internationally this weekend on approximately 47,450 screens in 79 markets in release. Including the North American gross, the global tally is $253.2 million in week one.
The soundtrack, released digitally by WaterTower Music Nov. 9, includes 25 new tracks, among them: three solo piano tracks which aren’t included in the film (“Dumbledore’s Theme,” “Fantastic Beasts Theme” and “Leta’s Theme.” ClassicFM is showcasing an audio interview with Howard regarding the film. WaterTower will issue the music on CD Nov. 30 and on vinyl in January.
Howard is also in the box office top 10 with a second entry, Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms, a lavish fantasy that has underperformed expectations somewhat, due in no part to its impressive orchestral score, which featuring chorale music. The Nutcracker score was recorded by the London Philharmonia conducted by L.A.’s own concert master Gustavo Dudamel.
Danny Elfman and Universal’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch fell to second place after topping last week’s chart. Grinch adds another $38.165 million for a North American total through Sunday of $126.541 million. This is the latest adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic that was originally published in 1957. The film features the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch as The Grinch, Cameron Seely as Cindy-Lou Who, Rashida Jones as Donna Who, Angela Lansbury and Kenan Thompson. The PG-rated film is narrated by Pharrell Williams and features a pop soundtrack in addition to Elfman’s score. Directed by Yarrow Cheney, Grinch earned $9.4 million from the international marketplace for a global weekend of $47.6 million and a cume to date of $151.7 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, Queen music continues to please the crowds, with Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody biopic of the ’80s rock band enjoys a solid third weekend of $15.7 million for a domestic total of $127.886 million and a global cume of $384.3 million — enough for Variety to proclaim it a “blockbuster.” Rami Malek stars as the late great Queen front-man Freddie Mercury and also stars Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Joseph Mazzello, Mike Myers, Tom Hollander, Aidan Gillen, Allen Leech and Ben Hardy. It is directed by Bryan Singer.
