Composers Max Richter, Ludwig Goransson and Cyrille Aufort were among the composer winners at the 9th Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

The Black Panther was the big winner at the Ninth Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards, copping three trophies and edging out A Star Is Born, which nabbed two wins.

Panther composer Ludwig Goransson took home the trophy for original score (sci-fi/fantasy/horror), and the Marvel Comics superhero epic also triumphed in the original song competition (sci-fi/fantasy/horror) with “All the Stars,” Written by Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg, SZA, Sounwave, and Al Shux and performed by Lamar and SZA. In the hotly-contested soundtrack album competition the Panther posse and Interscope Records beat A Star Is Born and Warner Bros. Records.

Max Richter took top honors in the original score feature film category for Focus Features Mary Queen of Scots, flying in from his home in London to accept his trophy at the festive ceremony, which took place at the Avalon Hollywood theater on Vine Street last night (Nov. 14). Alexandre Desplat won for original score animated feature with his work on Fox Searchlight’s Isle of Dogs. And French composer Cyrille Aufort topped the original score documentary race with his music for Hulu’s March of the Penguins: The Next Step.

Songwriter Diane Warren took home a trophy for the documentary song “I’ll Fight,” performed by Jennifer Hudson in CNN’s RBG, a look at the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On the red carpet prior to the ceremony Warren said the song went over like gangbusters when Hudson performed it at an ACLU event earlier in the week. Onstage, accepting her prize, Warren dedicated the song not only to Ginsburg herself, “hoping those ribs heal!,” but also “to all the firefighters who are fighting so hard.”  Warren’s other win was for original song in an independent film, for “To Get Here,” performed by Willie Nelson in A24’s The Last Movie Star. “I’ll Fight” was performed at the HMMA show by Marisa Corvo.

On the supply-side, Netflix led the nominations with 16, ultimately scoring three wins in an evenly divided trophy field that saw Disney and Warner Bros. each get two. A welcome aspect of the HMMA’s is that with its wide range of categories it casts a  wide net and allows many individual composers, songwriters and distributors that would normally not make it into Hollywood’s awards season mainstream to compete and bring their work to the attention of the industry. And as one of the earliest awards shows, it is seen as something of a bellwether for the general trends.

The HMMA’s honor internationally produced music in film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers, and have historically been a good indicator of the way awards season winds are blowing.  With over 500 submissions this year, HMMA nominees are chosen in specific genres of music for film, TV and video game including dramatic feature, sci-fi/ fantasy, documentary and animation. Nominations and winners are chosen by an advisory board selection committee that includes journalists, music executives, music-media industry professionals comprised of the peer groups the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL), the Television Academy, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Recording Academy, as well as various performing rights organizations. Eligibility is somewhat unconventional in that nominees are released between Oct. 1 of the prior year, and Dec. 31 of the current year.

A portion of net proceeds from the show was donated to Education Through Music  Los Angeles (ETMLA).
