Proven winners will vie with talented upstarts at the Ninth Annual Hollywood Music in Media Awards tonight. Hans Zimmer, Carter Burwell, Terence Blanchard and Alexandre Desplat are among the nominees in the feature film original score category, where Mary Queen of Scots‘ Max Richter and Green Book’s Kris Bowers are also in contention. Recently minted superstar Justin Hurwitz, Nicholas Britell and Theodore Shapiro also made the shortlist.

Animated film, horror film and documentary all have their own categories, with names including Alan Silvestri, Christophe Beck, Ludwig Goransson and Tyler Bates among the luminaries in those categories. Each sector also has its own contest for best song. Films competing for early awards season glory include A Star is Born, Black Panther, BlackKklansmanThe Ballad of Buster Scruggs and If Beale Street Could Talk.

The HMMA’s honor internationally produced music in film, TV, video games, commercials and trailers, and have historically been a good indicator of the way awards season winds are blowing.  With over 500 submissions this year, HMMA nominees are chosen in specific genres of music for film, TV and video game including dramatic feature, sci-fi/ fantasy, documentary and animation. Last year, HMMA introduced a new category Best Music Documentary category, acknowledging non-fiction works that shed light on the music-making process, educating and amplifying the  impact of music or a musician. All nominees are productions released between Oct. 1, 2017 and Dec. 31 2018.

The HMMA is the only award that specifically recognizes music in all visual media. The HMMA nominations are chosen by an advisory board and selection committee that includes journalists, music executives, music-media industry professionals comprised of select members of the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL), The Television Academy, the AMPAS Music Branch, NARAS and performing rights organizations.

The 2018 Hollywood Music in Media Awardst will be held at The Avalon Hollywood 1735 Vine Street on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018. A portion of net proceeds benefit Education Through Music – Los Angeles (ETMLA). For tickets and more information visit http://www.hmmawards.com
