Céline Dion’s new “Ashes” theme song for Deadpool 2 debuted yesterday in a music video that has racked up more than 5 million views on YouTube. The Twentieth Century Fox release hits theaters May 18.
Dion and Fox managed a splashy video premiere on ABC’s Good Morning America. The songstress tweeted that the “@deadpoolmovie is off-the-charts!” and promised “You’ll be laughing your ‘ashes’ off!”
Entertainment Weekly couched the pairing of a classy chanteuse like Dion with a raucous superhero sequel in counter-intuitive terms: “There are certain things you expect from a superhero movie sequel: explosions, villains, action set pieces. One thing that most of them don’t have is an original power ballad sung by the inimitable Céline Dion.”
In the video, Dion belts it out while the Deadpool character — played in the film by Ryan Reynolds — twirls balletically in an interpretive dance onstage beside her, interspersed with glimpses from the film. The clip ends with an exchange in which Deadpool tells Dion they need to do another take, because this one “is too good.”
Deadpool 2 director David Leitch told EW it was Reynolds’ idea to tap Dion, quoting the star as calling her “an incredible singer, but she’s also someone who works in the sort of subversive Deadpool universe.”
Leitch also directed the music video, teaming with the film’s cinematographer Jonathan Sela. In addition to Reynolds, Deadpool 2 stars Josh Brolin and Morena Baccarin. It features a score by composer Tyler Bates.
In addition to “Ashes” the Deadpool 2 soundtrack will include one more original song written for the film: “Welcome to the Party” by Diplo, French Montana and Lil Pump, featuring Zhavia Ward.
The complete lineup is:
1. “Ashes” – Céline Dion
2. “Welcome To The Party” – Diplo, French Montana & Lil Pump (feat. Zhavia Ward)
3. “Nobody Speak” – DJ Shadow feat. Run The Jewels
4. “In Your Eyes” – Peter Gabriel, 5. Take On Me (MTV Unplugged – Summer Solstice) – a-ha
6. “If I Could Turn Back Time” – Cher
7. “9 to 5” – Dolly Parton
8. “All Out Of Love” – Air Supply
9. “We Belong” – Pat Benatar
10. “Tomorrow” – Alicia Morton
11. “Mutant Convoy” – Tyler Bates
12. “Bangarang” (feat. Sirah) – Skrillex
Dion, who records for Sony, is arguably the queen of soundtracks. Her recording of “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme to 1997’s Titanic, helped make that album the fourth best-selling soundtrack of all time, at 28 million units. The “My Heart Will Go On” video has more than 114 million views. It remains to be seen how many “Ashes” will ignite.
