“Claudio Quest” features characters in an 8-bit existential crisis.

“Claudio Quest,” the musical inspired by video games — specifically the Nintendo “Mario Bros.” series — was the top achiever at the New York Musical Theater Festival Awards, taking six trophies, including Outstanding Direction for John Tartaglia (a Tony nominee for “Avenue Q”).

Singing eggplants, snappy pirhana plants and up-tempo turtles are among the colorful cast members in this fantasy tale, which follows the adventures of a super hero, his little brother and a ninja princess. It’s an 80’s video game on stage where all the characters are in an existential crisis,” said Marshall Pailet, who along with Drew Fornarola did the book, music, and lyrics.

The New York Musical Theater Festival ran July 7-27,” with Quest” getting an extended run announced on day 2. No word yet on where the show is headed next.
