Furukawa Conducts ‘Last Guardian’ to Market

Takeshi Furukawa’s The Last Guardian soundtrack is coming to vinyl in Q1. In addition Sony is also making the score available via the Composer’s Choice PS4 Music App, featuring 19 tracks that are available at the PlayStation Store. The soundtrack app supports both stereo and surround playback, and also allows users to export all the tracks as stereo MP3 files via a compatible USB drive.

The Last Guardian, which was released for the PlayStation 4 on Dec. 6, was created by game designer Fumito Ueda, genDESIGN and SIE Japan Studio.

“As fans of Ueda’s past games can attest, the audio component of his projects – both sound and music – play a vital role in immersing the player in a rich fantasy world,” Sony Interactive Entertainment of America producer Dais Kawaguchi said, alluding to the theme from the 13th boss in Ueda’s most famous game, Shadow of the Colossus.  Hearing it, “many gamers will immediately recall standing atop a sprinting Agro in pursuit of a gigantic snake like creature soaring over a barren desert.”

The aural presentation in The Last Guardian is no less crucial in enhancing the game world, Kawaguchi said. Furukawa also conducted the score, recorded with the  performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, Trinity Boys Choir and London Voices at Air Studios, London. For audiophiles and collectors, a vinyl release of the soundtrack will be available early next year.

The Last Guardian is the story of a boy and a creature, alone amidst ancient ruins, working together as they seek a path to freedom. Furukawa’s emotion-laden score provides a haunting complement to the adventure, blending orchestral elegance with a more modern sensibility. To accompany the emotional narrative, Furukawa said he endeavored to create orchestral pieces “as timeless and memorable as those that touched my life as a child.” Furukawa’s music from The Last Guardian will have its first live performance in January at SCORE in Copenhagen.

The Los Angeles-based Furukawa’s music spans television works for Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, to the prestigious Cannes Lions-winning global campaigns for Mercedes-Benz, Apple, and Sony.  His signature style has been described as “soaring melodies colored by sophisticated orchestration.”

Previous works in cinema include scores to NoNAMES and the critically acclaimed Slamdance-winning documentary Bhopali. An ardent enthusiast of contemporary concert music, he is also currently working on a forthcoming album of chamber works.
